A 15-year-old was at the wheel of a car which was driven at an excessive speed in a Caithness village, Wick Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday.

The youth exited from a junction when it was not safe to do so and collided with another vehicle in which an 83-year-old occupant was travelling. The woman suffered a serious injury and both vehicles were damaged.

The teenage driver, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty by letter to charges of dangerous driving and not having a licence and insurance, on October 11. The accused is now aged 16.

Sheriff Andrew Berry continued the case for background reports from social workers and the Children's Panel, until February 23 when he will hear details of the incident from Fiscal David Barclay.
