LOCAL businesses have been showing their generosity by helping staff and patients at Caithness General Hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Amalie and Richard Johnston from the Corner Café started doing meals for hospital staff today (Monday), helped by funding from North Highland Construction Training Group.

Amalie is still doing takeaway food from her Francis Street premises but said that the hospital orders will take priority.

"These orders will have priority as I’m sure everyone will agree all NHS staff are working tirelessly not just during the Covid-19 outbreak but all other times too," she said.

"People can still ring in with their orders as normal and a time slot will be given unless it’s a quiet period where it may only take 10 minutes to get an order ready."

She added that the Corner Café sent a huge thank-you to Ian and Elaine Horne from Whisky on Tour "for their very generous donation", enabling the business to donate baking to NHS staff and for elderly people.

On Saturday evening, the Harbour Chip Shop in Wick donated food to the staff and drove the orders straight to the door of the hospital.

A crowdfunding page for Caithness General patients was set up by Ashley Ann Interiors with the aim of raising £300 but well exceeded that amount with a staggering 181 donations amounting to £3060 this evening (Monday).

The JustGiving page introduction reads: "Members of our team at Ashley Ann have heard from staff at Caithness General Hospital that due to restrictions on visitors many patients aren’t able to get stuff they would normally be brought by family and friends.

"We have set up an arrangement with Tesco to deliver a supply of goods to the hospital as soon as we reach our target – we’ll be donating our contribution to this great cause shortly and hope that you can help with a pound or two.

"Ashley Ann will provide the hospital with the funds immediately and also cover JustGiving’s processing fees so that the entire sum of cash raised can be put to good use straight away."

The Home Bakery in Wick's Francis Street also made up boxes of cakes thanks to money donated from the local Clydesdale Bank staff as a thank-you gesture to the hospital workers.
