PEOPLE affected by diabetes are being encouraged by the charity Diabetes Scotland to go along to its local group meeting in Wick next week.

The Diabetes Scotland Caithness Local Group has been running for more than 48 years and is now looking for new members. The group is especially keen to hear from anyone who might be interested in taking on the roles of chairperson, secretary or treasurer.

Diabetes Scotland local groups offer people living with diabetes the chance to meet others with similar experiences, talk about the issues affecting them and enjoy social events. There is also an opportunity to get involved in local activities to campaign for improved diabetes care and services.

The Caithness group has raised over £160,000 to support people living with diabetes and Diabetes UK research projects. The group also hosted a free Living with Diabetes Day event for people living with type 2 diabetes which provided practical information and support to all who attended.

The meeting takes place in the Nethercliffe Hotel on Wednesday, February 12, starting at 7pm.

Volunteer support officer Mhairi Macdonald said: “We have a strong network of local groups across Scotland which meet regularly to offer support to people living with diabetes. Living with diabetes every day can be overwhelming. Meeting regularly with people who understand what you’re going through can help you better understand and manage the condition.

“Local groups offer people the chance to talk about things that are important to them, hear from experts on a range of subjects and get involved in fun activities. Our groups are also a fantastic source of support to Diabetes Scotland in helping us to raise awareness in local communities and campaign for improved care.

“I would encourage anyone affected by diabetes – whether you live with the condition or are close to someone with diabetes – to come along to the meeting in Wick on February 12.”

To register to attend, email mhairi.macdonald@diabetes.org.uk or call 07921 111706.
