A Scotrail spokesperson said that a maintenance vehicle (road rail vehicle) came off the rails in reverse gear at around 1pm but has "now been re-railed".

The line was closed with the Inverness to Wick train terminating at Helmsdale and a replacement bus service put into operation.

The 12.34pm Wick to Inverness service terminated at Thurso with an additional train starting at Helmsdale calling at stations towards Inverness.

The 10.41am Inverness to Wick terminated at Helmsdale.

Ticket acceptance is in place with Stagecoach North buses between Inverness and Wick.
