THE work of the RNLI took centre stage at the annual Thurso lifeboat open day on Sunday.

Crowds gathered in the sunshine at Scrabster to enjoy a wealth of activities with the presence of the Scottish Ambulance Service, the coastguard, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Assynt Mountain Rescue Team delighting visitors. In addition there was a display of model lifeboats made by local RNLI supporter Ted Miller and Mina Mackay's dancers entertained the crowds.

A total of £1000 was taken in from donations and sales from barbecue, teas, cakes and other fundraisers.

Not only did the open day give visitors the chance to meet and speak to the volunteer crew, have a look around the station and get a tour on board the lifeboat, but they were treated to a simulated "emergency incident" in which the RNLI crew was paged and launched the lifeboat to recover a "casualty" from the seas. Once recovered the casualty was given CPR until transferred to the ambulance service which, along with other emergency services, took part in the demonstration.
