Wick man Harry Gray said his Covid-19 vaccination was so swift and painless that it was over before he knew it.

“I never felt a thing – I didn't even know they'd done it,” Mr Gray (83) said after receiving his first dose at the town's Pearson Practice today.

He is keen to spread the message that as many people as possible should take the vaccine when it is offered to help beat the virus.

"I don't understand the uncertainty at all," said Mr Gray, a retired businessman and local historian. "It's a vaccine to prevent you catching it.

"It certainly gives you a lot of protection, especially the second one that I'll get in April. It was over and done with before I knew it had happened.

“It's a fantastic thing that they've got this vaccine and they've got such quantities of it."

Staff at the practice, based at Wick Medical Centre, took delivery of 260 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine on Wednesday afternoon and immediately began putting appointments in place. They were aiming to administer first vaccines to the majority of their patients in the over-80 age group by Friday.

Another 200 doses are expected to arrive next Wednesday.

Mr Gray, a former chairman of the Wick Society, agreed that the vaccination programme will be a vital part of the process of returning to normal life.

“It's a step towards opening the door again,” he said. "It was a fantastic experience all round – it was very efficient."

Dr Ewen Pearson says staff at the practice will be working their way down through the risk groups according to the Scottish Government guidelines.

He said today: “It is all going well and according to plan, and the supply seems to be improving."

NHS Highland says it expects the vaccination programme for the over-80 age group to be completed by February 5.
