Concerns over Women’s Aid changes raised at Thurso meeting

Community representatives in Thurso are concerned about moves to rejig how Women’s Aid groups operate in the Highlands.

The support for women and children who have suffered domestic abuse is provided from bases which cover Inverness, Lochaber, Ross-shire and Skye, and Caithness and Sutherland.

Highland Council is reviewing the contracts it has with the organisations which would channel its funding to one provider for the region. It also is looking at the service being made available to men.

The proposed funding change has rung alarm bells for members of Thurso Community Council.

Speaking at their November meeting, Highland councillor Matthew Reiss said: “I think it’s something that we need to keep an eye on and hope that it does not lead to centralisation. Local people know what’s best for their area.”

Inverness Women’s Aid has already claimed it could have to close if the new proposals were implemented.
