SHOPPERS in Caithness have been asking when the Argos store in Wick Retail Park will reopen after remaining closed since the start of lockdown.

The popular catalogue retailer is a subsidiary of Sainsbury's which sent an email out yesterday to quash local rumours the store may not open again.

The Sainsbury's spokesperson said in the message: "We opened a first phase of around 145 standalone Argos stores to customers for collections and returns on Monday, June 15, and we currently have over 170 back open.

"We also announced yesterday [Wednesday, July 1] that we’re working to open another 100 this month as part of our phased approach.

"We will keep our customers and colleagues updated as and when we re-open more stores, including the Wick store."

She went on to say that any information about the Wick store being earmarked for closure "is incorrect".

On June 11, the company's chief executive, Simon Roberts, issued an update on the reopening of Argos stores throughout the UK.

He stated: "Our business has changed enormously over the last three months and we want to be very careful as we move to the next phase.

"Safety is our absolute priority and our colleagues have been working hard to get everything ready and to make sure you can shop with us safely."

He said that all stores will have Perspex safety screens at the tills and staff will be following social distancing guidelines at all times, including when they collect items from the warehouse and bring them to the collection counter.

"Our colleagues are doing everything they can to get the right measures in place to ensure everyone stays safe and can shop with us in the ways they want to.

"I know life is going to be different for all of us for some time but we are committed to adapting and changing our business to make sure we are serving you as best we can."
