Community council concern over drivers flouting law on Wick street
Issues around the pedestrianised area of Wick town centre were discussed at a community council meeting on Monday.
Due to the Assembly Rooms being closed, the meeting of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council (RBWCC) was held at the East Caithness Community Facility.
Item number four on the RBWCC action list highlighted that an email is to be compiled for Highland Council expressing concern over “speedy cars in High Street” particularly in the cobbled area.
The community council wants to see the speed of vehicles reduced to 5mph in the pedestrianised/cobbled area and for it to be closed off on street market days.
Community councillor Wendy Campbell queried why cars were still using the pedestrianised area when restrictions are in place to allow only disabled drivers and access for workers dropping off goods.
“There’s nothing up there to say you don’t want other cars in there,” she said.
Chair Allan Farquhar reminded her that there is a notice at the entrance to the pedestrian zone which clearly states the restrictions. “Part of the upgrade was to put in a bollard to stop people getting in in the first place,” he said.
RBWCC member Norma Craven recounted the story of one driver who was tackled when driving through the area when a market was on. “After swearing at you, they said they didn’t see the signs.” She suggested that the information panel needs to have greater visibility.
