A CANCER charity collection box has been stolen from a takeaway in Wick.

Northern Constabulary is appealing for witnesses to the incident which took place at the Curry King in Bridge Street yesterday (Sunday) between midnight and 12.20am.

A CLIC Sargent charity box, containing an unknown amount of money, was removed from the counter of the takeaway.

The money raised from collection boxes is used to help finance care for children and young adults with cancer.

Peter Logie, the charity’s community fundraiser for the Highlands and Islands and Moray, said those responsible for the theft have taken away vital funding.

"We have collection boxes based at various stores and restaurants throughout Scotland," he said.

"They play a vital part in helping raise funds for cancer patients and we rely heavily on help from the public. All money raised is used to support young people who suffer from cancer up to the age of 24.

"The money raised has been able to finance a social worker and nurse at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. The money is also used to help accommodate families in Edinburgh and Glasgow while their children are being treated. Somebody who steals a box is preventing us from helping a young person who is suffering from cancer."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Wick Police Station on 01955 603551. Information can also be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
