FOR the first time in 20 years, Caithness civic leader Willie Mackay finds he has no public engagements to help out with at the weekends.

The Highland councillor for Wick and East Caithness has long been a popular compere at many events throughout the county, including galas, charity auctions, local funding events, shows and ceilidhs, supporting a great number of local organisations in the process.

Now with the coronavirus restrictions in place all these events have been put on hold.

"I have had 21 functions cancelled between now and the end of August," Councillor Mackay said.

"I had been really looking forward to this year, 2020.

"It is the first time in 20 years I have no social functions at the weekend."

Instead, he is finding time for jobs around the house such as painting and decorating, as well as getting on with projects in the garden.

"That is what I have been doing now at the weekends," he said. "However, I am sure it will all come good next year."

Meanwhile, Councillor Mackay's work in cattle breeding services is continuing as farmers still have essential jobs to get done.

He said: "The weather is now in favour for the farmers who will all be very busy in the next five months. We are so grateful to the farmers who are continuing on with this work and producing food for the nation – rightly so. There is nothing like home-grown produce."
