MERLIN Cinema has submitted its application to Highland Council to increase the number of screens at its Thurso complex from two to five.

The firm revealed to the John O’Groat Journal in November its plans to introduce three new screens at its Ormlie Road base by converting the former bowling alley into small theatres.

The alley, which was initially installed by the US Navy when they had a base in the area, was decommissioned when the previous operators of the cinema went out of business.

Penzance-based Merlin, which operates 15 cinemas across the UK but only Thurso in Scotland, tabled its plans for the expansion last week.

As part of the application, it is also seeking the go-ahead to add three external fire doors to the building.

Merlin Cinema reopened Thurso cinema in November 2015 after the previous operators went into administration.

During its first year of trading, it welcomed more than 70,000 customers.
