A TOTAL of 178 rams went through the ring of Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ Quoybrae centre.

In the Caithness Sheep Breeders Association section, champion Suffolk, judged by B Baillie, Sebay Farm, Tankerness, was a shearling from D. N. Campbell and Sons, Bardnaclavan, Bridge of Westfield, Thurso. By Hillend Haka, he was sold for £800 to the judge.

Reserve was a shearling, by Lakeview Loyalist, from D. Manson and Sons, Skaill, Thurso which sold for £850 to MKD Farms, East Murkle, Thurso.

Champion Border Leicester, judged by M Shearer, Lythmore Farm, Bridge of Westfield, was a shearling, by Ditton Diamond, from A Miller and Sons, Aimster, Thurso and was unsold.

Reserve was a shearling, by the same sire, also from Aimster, which sold for £750 to Messrs D. Miller, Buckies, Thurso.

Champion Texel, judged by A Swanson, Quarryside, Castletown, was a shearling, by Langside Oscar, from C & I Angus, Oldfield Farm, Thurso and sold for £1,150 to J D and M Leitch, Feolquoy, Evie, Orkney. Reserve was a shearling, by Courthill Rambo, from Bardnaclavan which sold for £1,000 to the judge.

Leading prices and averages: Suffolk – Skaill £700 and £450 ave £666.66 for three (£400 for 1 last year). Bardnaclavan £650, £600 and £550 ave £516.66 for nine (£475 for 10). Lynegar £650, £600 and £550 ave £505.55 for nine (n/c). East Murkle £450 and £400 twice ave £416.66 for three (£350 for two). Boggie Park £350 twice ave £350 for two (n/c). A total of 26 shearling rams averaged £505.77 (£380.48 for 21 last year)

Border Leicester – Aimster £850, £800 and £750 ave £741.66 for six (£633.33 for three).

Six shearling rams averaged £741.66 (£335.71 for seven).

Texel – Aimster £800 twice, £750 and £700 ave £615 for 10 (£380 for eight).

Oldfield £800, £720 and £650 ave £614.55 for 11 (£436.66 for nine). Bardnaclavan £720, £650 and £550 ave £517.77 for nine (£450 for seven). Hawkhill £600 and £400 ave £500 for two (£416.66 for three). A total of 67 shearling rams averaged £461.34 (£421.77 for 51).

Texel cross Suffolk – Lower Reiss (S Webster) £1,000.

Leading prices outwith association sale: Suffolk shearlings – Durran Mains £800, £650 twice and £600. Thuster Mains £600. Upper Geise £550, 520 and £500. Biggins £500 and £450 twice.

ANM sold 3,252 store and breeding sheep incorporating Dunbeath, Bettyhill, Forsinard and north-west Sutherland at its Quobrae centre.

The champion pen of 10 gimmers, judged by Liam Gunn, Caithness Livestock Breeders, were Cheviots from J & W MacKay, Biggins, Killimster and sold for £200 to W. Sutherland, Overton, Mid-Clyth, Lybster.

Gimmers: Cheviot/mule (14) averaged £142.14 (- £6.22 on the year) to £145 from H H & A Swanson,Tister Farm, Halkirk. Mule (148) averaged £137.89 (+ £3.56) to £150 from Ross Bros, Strichen Mains, Fraserburgh.

Cheviot (544) averaged £122.51 (- £24.64) to £380 from R & A Sutherland, Hilliclay, Thurso. Suffolk (54) averaged £113.89 (+ £5.66) to £145 from R. Sandison, Smerral, Bower.

Texel (270) averaged £110.27 (+ £9.01) to £155 from W. L. Gulloch, Hempriggs Mains, Wick. B/F (10) to £80.00 (+ £5.16) from A. M. M. Polson, Westerloch Farm, Wick.

Half-bred (1) to £60 (- £24.29) from W. Stewart, An-Cala, Gills.

Breeding ewes (927) averaged £59.55 (- £15.73) to £180 for 3 and 4 crop Cheviots from R & K Sutherland, Hilliclay.

Breeding rams (10) to £160 twice for Texel shearlings from W & I Manson, Ha’, Auckengill. Ewe lambs (346) averaged £59.37 (- £6.40) to £150 for Cheviots from W. G. Kirkpatrick & Sons, Tandou, Kirbister, Orkney.

Store lambs (417) averaged £50.64 (+ £4.01) to £72 for Texels from J B & A C Martin, Seaview Farm, Oldwick.

Feeding ewes and rams (511) averaged £61.88 (+ £5.03) to £118 for Texels from N & J Erridge, Spittal Mains, Halkirk.
