Castletown is seeing positive changes to village, says community council chairman

The past year has “seen a few changes” in the Castletown area, the chairman of the community council has said.

Speaking at the recent annual general meeting, Billy Dunbar said the historic Traill Hall building is being restored as a home after lying empty for a number of years while work to turn the old mill near the beach into a whisky distillery and visitor centre is “progressing well”.

Progress is also being made on plans to transform the former café building on Main Street into a restaurant.

“The football club has refurbished the club house and installed a new dugout and new flood lighting. This has really helped the look of the village and is a credit to their committee,” he said.

Mr Dunbar also noted that traffic calming measures in the middle of the village have been completed, as has the 20mph signage.

“The safe routes to school scheme is now complete along with the pavement in Murrayfield, but the external areas within the village are in a poor state of repair.”

Crime over the last year has been minor, said Mr Dunbar, but he expressed concern about the lack of police to deal with offenders – although he said patrols have taken place in the village following a meeting with an inspector and a local councillor.

Mr Dunbar stressed the time is approaching when the community council must recruit new members so it “can continue to serve the whole community”.

Earlier, Mr Dunbar was re-elected as chairman with Mark Thorn as vice-chairman, Liz Geddes as secretary and Gavin Sutherland as treasurer.
