Castletown couple ‘terrified’ after neighbour smashed living room window

A couple were concerned about a neighbour’s dog and contacted its owner – but got no thanks for their good deed.

Colin MacNeill (40) arrived home on June 8 and smashed the couple’s living room window, Wick Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday.

Sheriff Neil Wilson was told that the dog had been left in the accused’s house for 24 hours. His neighbours in Calder Square, Castletown, who sometimes look after the dog, could see it at a window and were concerned for its well-being.

One of them contacted MacNeill, who arrived and let the dog out.

Fiscal depute Grant McLennan said that the couple were sitting watching television when their living room window shattered. One of them was seated nearby and narrowly missed getting splattered with glass fragments.

The couple looked out and saw MacNeill walking down the street.

Police traced MacNeill to an address in Castletown. He admitted in court having caused the damage.

Sheriff Wilson said he took a serious view of his actions and commented: “The couple must have been terrified.”

MacNeill, of Calder Square, Castletown, will be sentenced on October 16 after the sheriff considers a background report.
