Castlehill open day will give insight into work of community heritage group
An open day at Castlehill Heritage Centre next month will offer a chance to identify vintage mystery objects, while youngsters will be able to take part in a sand-pit archaeological dig.
Activities will also include a quiz based on the centre’s current display, along with other competitions. Tea, coffee and home baking will be served.
The event is being hosted by Castletown Heritage Society on Sunday, June 15, with no entry charge. It will allow local people to see the current exhibition before it gives way to its summer counterpart – an interpretation of the flagstone industry.
The present exhibition, entitled “Moving in and Moving on”, features stories of immigration and emigration to and from the area.
The open day, running from 1pm to 4pm, will also give an insight into the wide-ranging work of the community heritage group. This includes the care and conservation of donated objects, responding to family history enquiries and looking after its collection of photos, maps, paintings and reference books.
Plans for the forthcoming season include a community concert called “ An invitation to James Traill’s drawing room” and a series of ancient crafts workshops – for example Pictish stone carving, prehistoric cooking and pottery.
