Forty-one cases of Covid-19 were detected in the Caithness South area in the latest seven-day period recorded by Public Health Scotland.

It meant Caithness South had a seven-day rate per 100,000 population of 1388.4 based on people tested for the virus between December 6 and 12 – still the highest in the Highland Council area.

Public Health Scotland's interactive dashboard has a map giving the number of positive cases in individual neighbourhoods, seven of which are in Caithness.

Thurso West had nine positive cases, while there were seven in Caithness North West and three each in Thurso East and Wick North.

If a neighbourhood has fewer than three positive cases, the number is presented as 0-2 "to help protect patient confidentiality". The county's other two neighbourhoods – Caithness North East and Wick South – came into this category based on tests from December 6-12, meaning there could have been zero, one or two positive cases in each.

There were 11 cases in the Sutherland South neighbourhood, and five each in Sutherland East and Sutherland North and West.

Public Health Scotland reported 705 positive cases across the Highland local authority area during the latest seven-day period, with a seven-day rate per 100,000 population of 299.5 for the region as a whole.
