Caithness Samaritans is on a recruitment drive – ‘Calls have been increasing enormously,’ says local director

The Caithness Samaritans branch based in Thurso is looking for volunteers to provide a listening ear for people struggling with their mental health.

The charity provides support to anyone in emotional distress, struggling to cope, or at risk of suicide throughout the UK and Ireland,

Director of the Caithness branch, Barbara Bethell, said that the organisation is embarking on a recruitment drive to attract more volunteers. “Calls to the Samaritans have been increasing enormously year on year, and we are in urgent need of some more listening volunteers to join the team,” she said.

Volunteers are asked to agree to undertake a weekly three-hour shift, and there are always two volunteers on duty, so no one is expected to manage on their own. A mileage allowance is available.

“We never give advice – we help the caller to talk through what it is that’s causing them distress and we support them as they find their own way forward,” said Barbara.

“No special qualifications are required – just a heart willing to listen and a desire to help; training will be provided.”

There is more information on the website, and if you are interested you can apply at Samaritans.org and someone will get in touch.

Barbara added: “Together we can make a difference.”
