CAITHNESS PUPILS TO CELEBRATE SCIENCE FESTIVAL WITH TECHFEST

TechFest is in Caithness this week (March 19 - 23) to show primary school pupils how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) skills can be used to build space rockets and solve investigations, as part of Caithness International Science Festival.
Pupils from Reay, Melvich, Tongue, Pennyland, Cannisbay, Bower, Keiss, Crossroads, Noss, Castletown, Farr, Miller, Dunbeath, Lybster and Thrumster Primary Schools will be able to take part in TechFest workshops throughout the week, as part of the festival which is organised by Caithness based charity ScienceO3.
In Racing Rockets pupils will put their imagination to the test as they design a space rocket that’s out of this world while Science Detectives challenges pupils to use their senses and science to solve mysteries.
Pupils can also take a journey through space and time in the interactive and immersive TechFest Dome at the family fun day on Saturday, March 23 at Wick High School.
Sarah Chew, TechFest managing director, said: “We’re really excited to bring our outreach programme to this year’s Caithness International Science Festival.
“The workshops we’re delivering are designed to show young people how the STEM subjects they’re studying at school, particularly science, can provide them with a range of unique skills that can be applied in all kinds of interesting careers.
“Like the festival organisers, ScienceO3, TechFest is incredibly passionate about promoting STEM activities to young people and the wider community and we’re looking forward to meeting staff and pupils in Caithness this week.”
Professor Iain Baikie, chairman of ScienceO3, said: "Each year the far north community looks forward to the Caithness International Science Festival. The public program spans three weeks, and during our educational week we run events nearly every evening.
“This weekend, more than 1,800 people will travel from far and wide to attend our Family Fun Day, which will offer more than 30 interactive presentations, a planetarium, speakers, shows and a café for guests.
“Our cooperation and friendship with TechFest dates from the first festival, seventeen years ago. Over the years our attendance has grown from 2,000 to 7,000. So we have travelled far together with TechFest, whose support we truly value.”
Each year, TechFest runs the highly popular TechFest Science Festival which attracts tens of thousands of children and adults to a series of STEM-based events in and around Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire, as well as a year-round programme of educational events for schools and young people.
