A Caithness pensioner who sexually assaulted a young teenage girl has been jailed for 13 months and placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years.

George Cameron of Sinclair Lane, Halkirk, had denied the offence which was committed on September 12, 2022 at a property in the county.

Sheriff Robert Frazer told the 76 year old: "This was a sexual assault on a 14 year old girl by kissing her, licking her neck and face, rubbing her naked breasts and placed your hand down her shorts.

"She states in her impact statement she has been badly traumatised by this and is fearful of leaving her own home.

“You also proceeded to trial despite strong evidence against you."

Cameron's defence counsel, Neil Beardmore said his client still denied the offence and argued: "It is not the most serious but is still serious.

"It is difficult to understand why this particularly offence occurred but of course he denies it.

“He is at low risk of reoffending and is a gentleman who is a candidate for a non-custodial sentence.

"He can't do unpaid work due to a number of health issues but he could pay compensation of have his liberty restricted.

“Plus there could be a conduct requirement not to have contact with anyone under the age of 18."

But Sheriff Frazer decided: "There is no alternative to a custodial sentence."
