Bower pupils’ STEM day and airport visit after open afternoon fundraiser
Pupils at Bower Primary School have been busy on a range of activities – from creating a construction site to visiting Wick’s airport fire service, as well as raising more than £300 for charity.
Their hectic spell at the end of term began with an open afternoon to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Parents, families and members of the community were invited to tour the school and admire the children’s work.
The event was made extra-special by the donations of baked goods and raffle prizes from the parents. Austen Foubister, in P4, had his own stall and raised money for Macmillan by selling kindlers he had helped to chop up.
A total of £310 was raised for the charity.
Head teacher Sylvie Sinclair said: “This incredible achievement for our small school highlights the amazing generosity and spirit of our community.”
Bower pupils, along with those from Crossroads, later visited Keiss Primary School for a day of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) activities.
The school hall was transformed into a bustling construction site where children worked in groups to create projects with materials such as cardboard and wood while using real tools and nails.
It was a hands-on experience that the children thoroughly enjoyed.
P1-3 teacher Abby Cook then organised a trip to Wick John O’Groats Airport as part of the class’s social studies topic, People Who Help Us. The pupils had an exciting time meeting the airport fire service as they learned about some of the important jobs people do.
Mrs Sinclair added: “It was truly a term to remember, filled with learning, fun and a strong sense of community spirit. The Bower school community is so generous with its support, time and commitment to our wee school.”
