A CAITHNESS pre-school unit reopened its doors this week after local people worked together to revamp it following its closure.

Low attendance numbers and reduced funding had forced Bower Busy Bees nursery to shut – but during the short closure period, and over the past few months, a groundswell of local support from residents both within the village and in the wider area has seen a huge amount of work done to develop and redesign the facility.

I cannot wait to see how the nursery develops in the coming months and years – it's already so inspirational.

With a recognised aspiration that the nursery needed to offer a different and unique experience for the children attending, it is the aim of the new committee and staff to make Busy Bees an inspirational learning environment with a focus on outdoor, creative play.

As well as reopening, this week sees the first of the new parent-led committee's fundraising efforts for the nursery as members prepare for a Christmas fayre and Santa's grotto at the Royal British Legion club in Thurso on Saturday (November 23), from 10am to 3pm.

There will be a number of performers entertaining on the day and and a range of stalls for visitors to enjoy, as well as the chance to find out more about the changes to the nursery and what it now offers parents and children.

Commenting on the restyled nursery, local mum Sharon Dismore said: "We are so excited for our daughter's future with Busy Bees.

"The play area is extensive and exciting and, even as an adult, I have already enjoyed several hours of play here with my daughter as we have been part of the team getting the space ready for reopening.

"I cannot wait to see how the nursery develops in the coming months and years – it's already so inspirational to me."

The nursery is open for two to five-year-olds and welcomes children from across Caithness.
