Pupils at Keiss Primary School have been developing their cycling skills by taking part in the national Bikeability training programme.
Cycling safely is an essential life skill and sessions led by Active Schools coordinator Gary McDonald and parent volunteer Treasa Hamilton have helped with basic awareness and bike-riding abilities to help youngsters progress to riding on the road.
The pupils from P5, P6 and P7 were presented with their Level 1 certificates at their morning assembly on Friday and took to the roads to begin their Level 2 training.
Bikeability promotes cycling as an activity and develops the skills and confidence needed for schoolchildren to cycle safely on the roads.
The pupils have also been making good use of the school and nursery’s newly installed bike shelter to keep their bikes dry during the day, after their ride to school.
Head teacher Fraser Thomson said: “With restrictions starting to lift, our pupils have been able to take part in activities that develop skills for life that we perhaps took for granted before lockdown.
"Our P4-7 pupils have started swimming lessons this term and, thanks to Treasa and Gary, pupils have progressed from developing simple bicycle awareness skills to learning to ride on the road.
"Huge thanks to Treasa and Gary for supporting Bikeability at Keiss Primary School and nursery.”
