One Wick family had plenty to celebrate with the arrival of a New Year's Day baby.

Remi MacDonald, weighing in at 6lb11ozs, was born at 9.42pm on Friday, January 1 – a few days ahead of schedule. She is the second daughter of Gail Mackay and Gordie MacDonald of Newton Row, Wick.

Mum Gail said: "We weren't expecting a New Year's Day baby. My due date was January 6. The rest of the family are delighted – they are over the moon with her arrival."

Gail went down to Raigmore last Wednesday evening (December 30) to be induced. The doctor was confident that she would not be having a New Year's Day baby, however the midwife was not so sure. "It all happened really quick," said mum.

Less than 24 hours after being born, baby Remi made the journey home to Wick where her big sister three-year-old Paisley was eagerly waiting to meet her.

Gail, who works for O'Brien Construction, said: "Paisley is just delighted, all she wants to do is help – she has been really good."

Remi is also proving to be very good, with mum saying: "She is doing fine, she is so content, it is great, just eating and sleeping."

Due to the current restrictions the extended family have not been able to visit baby Remi, however they have been able to see her on FaceTime.

Gail explained that the new visiting procedures at Raigmore meant that Gordie had to drop her off at the door, then she was not able to see him again until she was in the labour suite.

"It's not an easy time for parents. It's not so bad for second time mums, but it must be daunting for first time mums," she said.
