Maree Todd MSP has hailed Scotland’s social security system as applications open for the Scottish Government’s Child Disability Payment.

The Child Disability Payment – the first of three disability payments to be introduced by the Scottish Government – will replace the UK Government’s Disability Allowance for children.

Following the success of the benefit’s pilot in Dundee, Perth and Kinross and the Western Isles, the Scottish Government are now rolling out the payment across all local authority areas. The payment will start later this year and will be followed by an Adult Disability Payment.

Commenting, constituency MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross, Maree Todd said: “The Child Disability Payment is the first of three person-centred disability benefits to be introduced by the Scottish Government. The payment will help families with disabled children to cope financially with the likes of extra care and mobility costs.”

Applications can be made online as well as by phone, post or face-to-face.

Maree Todd MSP adds: “I’m pleased to see accessibility at the heart of our social security system. Every family should be able to access the payments they are due, with no one missing out on vital financial support due to a lack of awareness or barriers to applying.

“I know many families will welcome this benefit under Social Security Scotland and the Scottish Government’s commitment to removing the complexity and stress often associated with claiming benefits under the UK’s welfare system.”

“People in my constituency and across Scotland, are benefitting from an SNP Government that is putting dignity, fairness and respect at the heart of its social security system.”

People can find out more about the Child Disability Payment and apply through mygov.scot or by calling 0800 182 2222.

Those already receiving Disability Living Allowance for children do not need to make a new application as the Scottish Government will contact them ahead of their award being automatically transferred. This is happening in a phased approach and the Scottish Government aims to have the transfer process completed for everyone in receipt of Disability Living Allowance for children by spring 2023.

Awards will continue to be made at the same rates as clients’ previous Disability Living Allowance for children payments and there will be no break in entitlement in line with our commitment to a safe and secure transfer.
