As the nights get darker, the SSPCA animal welfare charity reminds you to be aware of deer when driving in the dark.

The highest risk times for deer are between sunset and midnight, and shortly before and after sunrise.

Watch out for deer on the roads.

Please drive slowly to watch out for deer crossing roads, particularly if you are near wooded areas.

If a deer does cross in front of you, please try to stop if it is safe to do so as deer often travel in groups so there is likely a few more to come. Remember not to get too close as this could spook them.

Use your full beams when there is no oncoming traffic so that you have better visibility. If the worst should happen and you or another driver injures a deer, please call the SSPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999. If the incident occurs out of our hours please contact Police Scotland.
