Action-packed fun to come at Caithness International Science Festival!
Get ready for a week of discovery, excitement, and hands-on fun as the 23rd annual Caithness International Science Festival returns from March 17-22!
This year’s festival promises an action-packed line-up of events and activities for the whole family, with something to spark curiosity in everyone.
Organised by Science 03, the festival includes a dynamic schools and early years programme and culminates in the much-loved Family Fun Day on March 22 at Wick High School.
Bringing together experts from diverse fields such as astronomy, biology, conservation, food and farming, and history, the festival is an unmissable opportunity to explore science in an interactive and entertaining way.
Expect to dive into the worlds of offshore wind, virtual reality, climate change, RSPB reserves, the Flow Country, exotic animals, drones, Scottish seafood, 3D printing, robotics, and much more!
At the Family Fun Day, visitors can program robots, test virtual reality goggles, step inside Dynamic Earth’s mobile planetarium, and meet the friendly animals from Caithness Animal Farm Park. Glasgow Science Centre will wow audiences with their Castles Rock! Live Science Show, in partnership with Historic Environment Scotland, bringing Scotland’s castles to life in an action-packed spectacle of construction and destruction. Meanwhile, The Critter Keeper will introduce his cheeky critters in two live discovery shows.
Chairperson Iain Baikie expressed his enthusiasm, saying: “For over 23 years, the Caithness International Science Festival has been inspiring pupils, students, teachers, and the wider community with engaging presentations and hands-on learning.
“Our Family Fun Day is always a highlight, attracting over 2000 visitors to Wick High School and café. We’d love to see even more people join us this year – so don’t miss out! Mark your calendars for Saturday March 22, 12-4pm, and help make this our biggest festival yet.”
Festival highlights don’t stop there. Attendees can explore Glasgow Science Centre’s Body Vision exhibits, create MicroArt with Science Skills Academy, build with K’Nex in TechFest’s hands-on corner, and discover light and magnetism with Caithness Astronomy Group.
Wick High School Radio Club will also be connecting with contacts worldwide – so be sure to get involved!
Festival coordinator Nicola Macleod said: “We are thrilled about this year’s festival. Our schools and early years programme is packed with exciting sessions, and the Family Fun Day will be a fantastic grand finale. With over 30 local and national exhibitors, there’s plenty to see and do.
“We’re especially excited to welcome back the science centres who are always supportive of our festival. Plus, we’re delighted to introduce new exhibitors like Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks and UHI Shetland.”
Science 03 is grateful to the generous funders of this year’s festival, including the Scottish Government, Thistle Wind Partners, Developing the Young Workforce North Highland, KP Technology Ltd, and Foundation Scotland through the Halsary Windfarm Community Benefit Fund (Halkirk & District), RWE Camster Wind Farm Community Fund, Tannach and District Wind Farm Trust Fund, Watten Windfarm Trust Fund, and Stroupster Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund.
