A SCENIC lay-by on the Causewaymire road in Caithness has been "blighted" by the dumping of an abandoned caravan.

The matter was highlighted by the county's civic leader, Councillor Willie Mackay.

He said: "I just can't understand how someone or some people would want to spoil our beautiful county and such a scenic part of it. It is pretty grim and bit of an eyesore for the tourists."

Councillor Mackay, who represents Wick and East Caithness, had been driving past when he noticed the Marauder caravan. At first he thought someone had broken down, but he later decided it looked suspicious as it was in exactly the same spot that another caravan had been dumped in previously.

Councillor Mackay said: "The lay-by along side the main A9 road between Latheron and Thurso is now littered with the caravan having been deliberately ransacked – it is bashed to bits.

"The lay-by is just a couple of miles south of Spittal village and one of the most popular for touring traffic stopping off for picnics and taking in views of the massive Causewaymire and new Bad á Cheò wind farms."

He added: "This is not the first time an unwanted caravan has blighted this site as the same thing happened just a few years ago and on that occasion strong winds helped scatter rubbish across the lay-by. This time there has been no gusts of wind or bad weather to blitz the caravan but somebody must have caused this disgraceful scene."

The A9 is serviced by Bear Scotland. However, Councillor Mackay pointed out that Highland Council had tidied up the rubbish caused by the previous dumped caravan and cleared the site.

A Highland Council spokesperson said: “The management of the A9 trunk is carried out by Transport Scotland and its contractor Bear NW.

“Abandoned caravans can be reported to Highland Council 24/7 by using the online report forms at www.highland.gov.uk/report and by then choosing the Health and Safety form, or by phoning the council’s service centre during office hours on 01349 886603."

Information on how to report abandoned vehicles and caravans is available on the council’s website www.highland.gov.uk under the A-Z.
