60-year-old man on murder charge after Wick incident

A 60-year-old man appeared in private at Inverness Sheriff Court today on a charge of murder after an incident in Wick at the weekend.
Bruce Rothwell of Wick made no plea, was committed for further examination and remanded in custody. His defence solicitor Laura-Jane McFarlane applied for bail but it was refused by Sheriff Gary Aitken.
The charge indicates that 50-year-old Thomas McTeir died by having his neck compressed.
Police Scotland confirmed that the 60-year-old had been arrested and charged after what they described as "a disturbance" at a property in Barrogill Street around 9.30pm on Saturday. Mr McTeir was taken to the town's Caithness General Hospital. He was later transferred to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness where he died on Tuesday night.
Police will continue to have a presence in the area and are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to get in touch.
Detective Inspector Craig Still said: “A police presence will remain in the area while enquiries continue and I would like to thank residents for their patience during this time.
“Anyone with information about the incident who has not yet spoken to police is asked to contact 101 quoting reference number 3874 of June 16 or alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 1111 if you wish to remain anonymous.”
A section of Barrogill Street was cordoned off to allow police officers to carry out their investigation at the scene.
