GARY Mackay-Steven was named as man of the match as Dundee United came agonisingly close to beating Dynamo Moscow in the Europa League on Thursday.

Deep into injury time, the Tannadice club were closing in on a historic victory leading 2-1 with goals from Willo Flood in the 37th minute and Keith Watson in the 75th minute either side of a Igor Semshov equaliser five minutes before the break.

The mega-rich Russian club failed to cope with the Thurso-born winger’s pace as he created numerous chances.

But, with seconds to go, Alexander Kokorin fired a 25-yard strike that took a wicked deflection off a United defender to land in the back of the net.

United manager Peter Houston praised the 22-year-old, saying that if he can repeat his performance in Russia next week, the club has a great chance of progressing.

“When you consider that Dynamo Moscow had a 19 million euro winger playing for them, you have to wonder what Gary is worth,” he said.

“He had a brilliant game and he is learning as he goes along all the time.”
