Old well uncovered at the site of new Wick harbour development

The well that was found at the site.

CONTRACTORS working on a major new development at Wick Harbour were blown away when they unearthed a well which could have lain undiscovered for more than a century.

They chanced upon it during the work to turn the historic Thomas Telford buildings at Harbour Quay into the operations and maintenance base for the Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited (Bowl) project.

The find, off Telford Street, was emailed anonymously to the Caithness Courier this week but it is not known when it was actually discovered.

A spokeswoman for SSE said it notified Highland Council about the discovery and took advice before carrying on with the renovation project whose timetable has not been affected.

“We can confirm that the image provided does show a previously unrecorded well that was uncovered whilst undertaking the renovation works in Wick,” she said.

“As a responsible developer, we informed Highland Council’s historic environment and planning department which instructed our contractors to record the details and location of the well and then to cap it in order to progress with the renovation works.

“The well has not impacted the programme of works.”
