WICK library, gym and swimming pool are now all under one roof as the East Caithness Community Campus finally opened its doors to the public.

High Life Highland (HLH) is now encouraging people to use the state-of-the-art facilities which it is hailing as among the best in the Highlands.

HLH facilities manager William Durrand said the difference in choice between the new campus and what existed previously in the town cannot be compared.

“There is no comparison,” he said.

“Having this new building is night and day compared to what was previously in Wick.

“I’m sure when people come up to see us they will see the benefits of the combined approached we have introduced with the library, gym and swimming pool being in the same building.”

The library is based on two floors with a wide selection of books and computers which will be available for public access along with an improved children’s play area, meeting rooms and customer service points on both floors.

The fitness studio has 14 new items of equipment compared to what was available at the former Wick Swimming Pool building in Burn Street and can cater for a greater capacity.

“We can now have 30 people using the gym at any one time compared to 18 at Burn Street,” said Mr Durrand.

“We have nine extra cardiovascular equipment and five extra strength equipment as part of 14 new machines. Also, we have seven treadmills whereas we only had four treadmills at Burn Street.”

The six-lane swimming pool accompanies a toddlers’ pool, sauna and dry room facilities with a seating area above. Mr Durrand said the pool is the best in the region and hopes it will be a venue for competitions.

He said: “The pool has to be the best in the Highlands.

“I hope there is going to be a big upturn in people using it and we can host Highland swim team events, training weekends and even get kids from other parts of the Highlands to train here as there is nothing else that can compare with what is now here.”

The campus will be open Monday to Friday 7am to 10pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
