Junior football club Thurso United has taken delivery of a potentially lifesaving defibrillator.

The device has been put in place at the Naver all-weather pitch and all users of the community facility will have access to it.

The automated external defibrillator (AED) can be used to treat a person experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest.

It was made possible through support from the Scottish Football Partnership Trust and Kilpatrick Fraser Charitable Trust.

Thurso United has around 250 boys and girls, aged from five to 16, across six age groups – U6, U8, U10, U12, U14 and U16. Nine volunteers run the club at committee level, with a coaching team of 35 leading the various sessions at each age group.

All age groups train once or twice a week and the club has also started a session specifically for the U12, U14 and U16 goalkeepers.

Thurso United coach/secretary Murray Coghill said: “On behalf of everyone involved at the club, I would like to thank the Scottish Football Partnership Trust and the Kilpatrick Fraser Charitable Trust for this defibrillator which will be housed in the Naver community facility, so all users have access to it.

“Having access to a defibrillator in an emergency can be lifesaving, especially in rural areas when ambulance response times may be longer.

“The Naver facility is used by children and adults of all ages, so we are delighted to have been selected to receive such a vital piece of equipment.”
