Sparkling 67 secures scratch trophy for Munro in Ronnie Wallace Open

Saturday saw Reay host the Ronnie Wallace Open, sponsored by Norbloc Construction. The prizes on offer attracted a field of more than 60 players with some excellent scores on a day of sunshine and showers.

Winner of the handicap prize was Joe Wilson, of Thurso, who fired a brace of birdies at the 14th and 16th on the way to an excellent round of 80 for nett 67.

Brian Robinson, visiting from Forrester Park Golf Club, secured second place after he also posted a round of 80 for nett 68, with a birdie at the 14th helping him along the way.

Wick’s Alan Farquhar took third place on nett 69 after steady halves of 43 and 41 gave him a gross score of 84.

Gregor Munro produced a sparkling round of 67 to win the scratch trophy. After an opening nine of 35, birdies at the 10th, 13th and 16th helped him to a sizzling back nine of 32 to secure the win by a margin of five shots.

Michael Smith was second on countback ahead of Thurso’s Tyler Gordon after both had rounds of 72. Both players managed solitary birdies in their rounds, Smith’s coming at the 13th, while Gordon birdied the ninth.

The nearest-the-pin prize courtesy of North Point Distillery was won by Andrew Main of Thurso. The day was also a memorable one for Wick member Nicky Klimas who used a 9-iron to fire a hole in one at the 15th hole.

On Sunday members were back on the course competing for the Pilkington Cup. Lee Malcolm birdied the 12th on his way to a winning score of 76 for nett 68.

Ian Farquhar took second place after a solid round of 84 for nett 69, with Willie Paton completing the podium places in third place after a strong finish helped him to a round of 84 for nett 70.

In the latest North Point Distillery Senior Stableford action, Jock Eunson showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels to post a winning score of 37 points. Stuart Greig finished second on 33, with Willie Steven third on 31.

This Saturday will see the ladies competing for the Centenary Bowl, while on Sunday the ladies and men will be able to compete in the Split Stane Texas Pairs.
