Owen Harrold reckons Wick Academy's improvement since the midway point of the Highland League campaign shows they are getting the measure of the opposition.

The defender was chosen as the sponsors' man of the match after the 3-1 victory over title-chasing Buckie Thistle at Harmsworth Park on Saturday, his first outing since suffering a knee injury at Brechin a month ago.

Harrold was one of a number of new recruits brought in by manager Gary Manson last summer.

"We're playing well just now," he said. "Since the turn of the year we've picked up a lot of points."

Harrold pointed out that Academy, with seven matches still to play, have collected three more points than they achieved in the whole of 2022/23.

"Today it was all about the fight," he said. "Every single first ball, second ball, we were on it.

"When we got the first goal there was really only one team that wanted to win that game.

"If any spectators coming in didn't know who was going for the league, you would have said Academy today and not Buckie.

"You've got to give credit to the boys up front. They worked their socks off.

"There could have been a few man-of-the-match winners today. Everyone was fantastic from the first minute to the last minute.

"It was always going to take time for us to gel. A lot of guys had never played Highland League football.

"You get to grips with certain teams and certain players the second time around, and this is obviously showing in the second half of the season."
