Caithness badminton juniors compete in national championships

Four members of Caithness Junior Badminton Club travelled to Perth to take part in the under-13 and under-17 Badminton Scotland National Junior Championships.

Sophie Mackay (10) and Liam Sinclair (10) competed in the under-13s, with Ava Cook (14) and Chloe Mackenzie (15) taking part in the U17 section.

Sophie, with partner Josie Columbine from Fortrose, made the final of the girls’ doubles. They picked up the runners-up title after a hard-fought game against the number one seeds Akshara Chavan and Emily Jobson.

Sophie is the daughter of Mark and Shona Mackay who between them have won many titles.

Results – U13 – Girls’ singles: Mackay – group stages, winning one of her three group games.

Boys’ singles: Sinclair – round two, losing 21-5, 21-9 against eventual runner-up James Huang.

Girls’ doubles: Mackay and Columbine, runners-up.

Boys’ doubles: Sinclair and Atharv Sharma (West of Scotland) – group stages.

Mixed doubles: Mackay and Sinclair – group stages.

U17 – Girls’ singles: Mackenzie – quarter-finals, losing to Qing Yang Xiao, number two seed, 21-18, 21-15.

Cook – round two, losing to Jaagruit Mannem (3/4 seed), 21-9, 21-11.

Girls’ doubles: Cook and Mackenzie – quarter-finals, losing to Mannem and Shreya Varghese, 21-15, 21-13.

Mixed doubles: Mackenzie and Callum McWhirter (Elgin) – quarter-finals, losing to number one seeds Lewis Smith and Deepti Vijayakumar, 21-15, 21-8. Cook and Alfie Sweeney (Glasgow and North Strathclyde) – round one, losing to Shona Brown and Adam Li, 17-21, 21-17, 18-21.
