SCRABSTER harbour master Brian Williams has retired after 30 years employed at the port.

Originally from Darlington, Brian arrived in Caithness 32 years ago on discharge from the Royal Navy and within a year he had married local lass Ann and settled into life at Scrabster after a short stint at Dounreay.

He has seen much change in the formation and structure of the port, having arrived shortly after completion of the Ola pier, and has witnessed the extension and development of the fish market and fish dock, the ice pier, the development of the seafood park and more recently the new deep-water basin and construction of the Queen Elizabeth pier.

One dream of Brian’s was the acquisition of a tug for the harbour, something that was not realised until his leaving dinner last week, at which trust chairman William Calder presented him with a model tug.

Retiring Scrabster harbour master Brian Williams was presented with gifts from the harbour users and staff. Gordon Mackenzie (second left) made the presentation on behalf of the staff, Norrie Bremner (left), of the Bremner Fishing Company, made the presentation on behalf of the users and office manager, Lesley Lorimer (right) presented Brian’s wife Ann with a bottle of champagne. Brian’s connection with the harbour remains, however, as he is lifeboat operations manager.

He is succeeded as harbour master by Gordon Mackenzie.
