A BIG-name Irish band is heading to Caithness next month. Folk-rock band The Saw Doctors will be taking to the stage at Skinandi's, in Thurso, on Monday, April 12.

Renowned for their energetic performances and barnstorming tours, the Irish band will be travelling around Scotland throughout April as part of their 2010 world tour.

Formed 24 years ago, only two founding members still remain - lead singer Davy Carton and lead guitarist Leo Moran.

The band looked set for fame in 1990 with their hit single "I Useta Love Her", a song that still holds the record as Ireland's best-selling single of all time. However, the success did not last and the band's popularity has been up and down over the years.

A strong core fan base has always remained, though, and every so often the band comes back into favour.

The past two years have been especially good for The Saw Doctors. After winning a lifetime achievement award at the Meteor Ireland Music Awards, their cover of the Sugababes' "About You Now", debuted at number one in the Irish charts.

They have built a strong reputation as a great live band in the two decades they have been gigging and their shows are known for being very lively and full of fun.
