Mike Flavell (47), from Reay, will tackle the 26.2 mile course on Sunday, April 25, to raise funds for the MS Society. Mr Flavell, who has worked at the hospital for 15 years, said: "As a physiotherapist I have many patients with multiple sclerosis and I want to show my support to them and others affected by the condition by doing this run. "I see a lot of patients with MS and I work closely with local support groups and branches. "The MS Society is a worthwhile charity to support. I would appreciate any donation, big or small." The keen rugby fan said: "I did my first marathon at Loch Ness last year and got the bug. I wanted to experience a big event so I thought, why not London?" MS is the most common disabling neurological condition affecting young adults. An estimated 100,000 people in the UK have MS. It causes the body's immune system to attack a substance called myelin from the brain and spinal cord. Damage to myelin - the protective sheath surrounding nerve fibres of the central nervous system - interferes with messages between the brain and the body. For some people, MS is characterised by periods of relapse and remission. For others it has a progressive pattern.
