THE misuse of Thurso's pedestrian precinct by vehicles continues to trouble the town's community councillors.

Member Don Smith is concerned the incidence has increased since the recent revamp of the area. "Cars and vans have been seen going up the precinct on a number of occasions," he said at last Tuesday's meeting in Caithness Horizons. "A lot of them are local and they know it's a pedestrian area." Mr Smith said he is particularly worried about the risk of a child running into the path of a vehicle. He questioned whether the offenders have been seen on the town's CCTV system. If so, he said the drivers should be traced by police and warned not to repeat the offence. Mr Smith said the use of the area by cyclists continues to be a problem. Members later noted that the recent high-profile police campaigns targeting antisocial driving in the town appears to have had some success. They noted that there has since been a noticeable decline in boy racers in the Shore Street and harbour area. Residents in and around Shore Street are meanwhile being urged to give their views on plans to create a one-way traffic system towards the harbour. Mr Smith reported that of the 70 letters sent out to residents, 35 have replied. He said the feedback so far has backed the idea which is designed to ease congestion and improve safety on the narrow, steep thoroughfare through the heart of the historic Fisherbiggins part of the town. Residents are being given until the end of November to respond to the consultation. |
