PLAYING conditions were good on Sunday for the Sandy Macgregor Open with little breeze and some sunshine. Despite this the competition scratch score was 71.

Ron Taylor continued his fine run of form taking the scratch prize with 69. He was out in 37 with a birdie at the first, but a run of bogeys at four, five and six set him back a little. Taylor was back in 32 with birdies at the 10th and 17th.

The second scratch prize went to Nicky Klimas with 73, who was also out in 37 with a seven at the third, bogeys at the fifth and ninth and birdies at the sixth and eighth. A run of par figures to the 14th seemed to have settled Klimas but bogeys at the 15th and 17th gave him 36 for the inward nine.

The handicap prize was won by Christopher Taylor with net 68, with bogeys at the second and sixth and birdies at the seventh and ninth for 35 to the turn. Christopher was back in 33 with birdies at the 12th and 16th and a bogey at the 13th.

The category one handicap section was won by veteran Bill Murray, who also had a 68 but lost on the better inward half to Taylor. Birdies at the first, third, fifth and ninth were spoilt by a double bogey five at the short second to reach the turn in 33. Bogeys at the 11th, 12th and 14th, together with birdies at the 13th and 17th, gave 35 for the inward nine.

Ali Mackay took second place on 69 with a fine two at the fourth following a double bogey five at the second. John Young was third in category one with 71 and would have done better but for an eight at the fifth.

Category two was won by James Harrold on nett 69, with a two (nett one) at the second to be out in the 32. The inward nine was not so good with a triple bogey six at the 14th to be back in 37. Graham Hay took second prize in this category playing consistent golf for a nett 70 and third place went to club treasurer Stewart Busby with a nett 71, helped by chipping in for a three at the 15th.

Nearest the pin at the second was won by James Harrold finishing just 5ft 6in from the hole.

Sunday's competition is the July Medal.
