THE body which ran the Wick Gala for many years has been wound up. The Wick Town Improvements Association came to an end at a special meeting which was held in the Assembly Rooms on Tuesday night and follows a police investigation into the finances of the organisation.

It is understood that a considerable amount of money is unaccounted for, although no details are being made public at the present time.

Former chairman Tommy Bean told the John O'Groat Journal it was unfortunate the committee has ceased to exist but he was pleased that another body will take its place. Two honorary independent treasurers will be responsible for overseeing all future financial transactions.

"It was sad to see the association being wound up after all these years but it was good that a lot of people were prepared to get involved in the new committee to ensure the gala can go ahead," he said.

Mr Bean pointed out that a stall which sold home baking in London Close last Friday raised £390 for the gala with one generous person handing over a donation of £100.

A number of other fund-raising events have been arranged, including a sponsored fancy-dress walk around Wick which has been organised by the Argyle Square Association. It takes place tomorrow while on Sunday a family medieval fund-raising day will be held at the Waterfront in Wick – the premises have been offered free of charge to the committee by owner John Sutherland.

The event will feature women dressed as wenches, stocks with people having to pay a fee to get out of them as well as a host of other activities such as log-chopping and horse-shoe throwing. There will also be an opportunity to have a family meal at the premises. The organisers have even arranged a pig on a spit to get into the right atmosphere but burgers and hot dogs will also be available.

Mr Bean again expressed his gratitude to the public and business community for their support and help in ensuring this year's gala goes ahead as planned from July 26 to August 2.

"It has been amazing," he said.

A Wick-based police spokesman yesterday confirmed that enquiries into the finances of the association are continuing.

"We are unable to say anything at this stage but a statement will be made in due course," he said.
