A WIDOWER will this weekend set off on a three-month journey from John O'Groats to Land's End as a tribute to his late wife.

Neil Jordan, from Wantage, Oxfordshire, is preparing for a 1435-mile trip which will involve cycling and kayaking and climbing the UK's three highest peaks – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike in the Lake District and Snowdon in North Wales.

The 57-year-old's efforts will not only raise money for Cancer Research UK as well as Sobell House Hospice – an adult specialist palliative care centre in Oxford – but will be dedicated to his late wife, Linda, who lost her battle against cancer last June.

Mr Jordan, himself a cancer survivor, will set off from John O'Groats on Sunday and will be joined intermittently by family and friends on his journey south.

He said: "Throughout our 32 years of happy marriage we had always enjoyed walking, and in the last two years we had taken up going for rides on a tandem. In 2006 I finally persuaded Linda to try canoeing, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

"It seemed appropriate I should make a journey dedicated to Linda combining walking, cycling, canoeing and sea-kayaking.

"I believe that Linda would approve of what I'm taking on and I hope that the money raised will help Cancer Research UK in its work of finding a cure for cancer, and Sobell House to continue to offer the care, comfort and support to others that Linda valued so much in her final days."
