Meeting to focus on Wick school's poor condition
Published:  29 February, 2008

THE poor condition of Wick High School is to be discussed at a special meeting being held next week.

Local Highland councillors as well as Far North MSP Jamie Stone are expected to attend Monday's meeting, which has been organised by the school's parent council.

The meeting will take the form of a presentation which has been put together by the parent body about the condition of the school's buildings and will include a tour of the major areas of concern.

Yesterday, Wick High's rector Alister Traill told the Groat: "The parent council ultimately feels there should be a replacement school or, failing that, certainly a very comprehensive upgrade."

The meeting is to be held within the school at 7pm on Monday (March 3).

Meanwhile, Highlands and Islands MSP Peter Peacock is to highlight the state of the school in the Scottish Parliament next week.

The Labour MSP has asked the Scottish Government what plans will be made to secure future improvements.

Mr Peacock said: "I have visited Wick High School a number of times over the years and I know just how much needs to be done. As each year passes, the school falls further and further behind modern standards.

"It is a great pity that Highland Council did not give the school a higher priority over recent years when they have had more money for school buildings than at any time since the 1970s.

"With the money for new school buildings drying up under the minority SNP Government, it is important to keep highlighting the needs of Wick."
