WICK was the venue for the under-13 county badminton championships and it proved to be an excellent tournament. Sixty-eight took part.

The youngsters gave it their all, with some excellent rallies and a good variety of shots, while their conduct on court was commendable.

Wick's Andrew Dunnett was the star of the day with a treble haul of titles, while his mixed doubles partner Lucy McAdie had a double success.

The championships began with level doubles and there were some cracking games from the first round all the way to the final. Andrew Dunnett and Michael Budge had a hard-fought win by 15/8, 12/15, 15/7 against Mark MacDougall and Richard Budge.

The girls' doubles was also keenly contested. Lots of younger ones were playing in their first tournament and most of the first-round ties were very close.

In the quarter-finals Jasmine Turnali and Amelia Mackay were edged out 19/21 by Nicole Tait and Eilidh Paterson. This proved to be one of the best girls' doubles matches of the day, with many impressive rallies.

Eilidh and Nicole went on to win the doubles title, beating Lucy McAdie and Lori Crowe 15/9, 15/13.

The singles featured some extremely close games. Andrew Dunnett breezed into the semi-finals but things changed when Charlie Logan gave him the best game of the tournament and just lost out 15/17, 11/15.

In the other semi, Christopher Green ran out of steam in the second game and Michael Budge progressed to the final.

In the all-Wick final, Andrew just had the edge over his doubles partner Michael with a scoreline of 15/11, 15/6.

Lybster has some excellent young girls coming through, a few of them just 10 years old. The first singles semi-final between Lucy McAdie and Lori Crowe featured very good serving from Lori and lots of long rallies, but Lucy was just too strong and she powered her way into the final 13/15, 15/6, 15/5.

Successful players show off their trophies after the U13 county badminton championships in Wick.

In the final Eilidh Paterson competed very well and the result of 15/4 15/8 to Lucy didn't reflect how close it was.

Andrew Dunnett and Lucy McAdie sailed into the final mixed doubles final where their opponents were Michael Budge and Jo-Anne Anderson. The latter pair had come through a tough semi against Michael Stone and Nicole Tait, with the Wick duo eventually prevailing by 15/10, 12/15, 15/10.

The final saw Andrew clinch the treble and partner Lucy take her second title of the day. It was another good game, with Michael and Jo-Anne trying very hard and going for every shot, but Andrew and Lucy ran out winners by 15/13, 15/9.
