WORK to transform derelict buildings in Wick into a windfarm operations and maintenance base has started.
Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited has started its renovation of the Grey Coast Buildings in Lower Pulteneytown.
They will become home to its O&M base for its 84 turbines which will be installed 13.5km off the east Caithness coast.
Once the turbines are operational, 90 people will be employed to work at its Wick base during the 25 year lifespan of the windfarm.
Renovation is expected to be fully completed by mid 2018.
It is estmated the turbines will create enough electricity to power 450,000 homes.
Road diversions are in place while work is carried out.
