Thurso cinema set to expand

Operator ‘blown away’ by early demand

THE owner of Thurso Cinema has made a long-term commitment to the town after confirming that he had signed a ten year lease of the Ormlie Road complex.

Businessman Rob Arthur agreed to the deal with Gunn Developments to rent the former All St@r Factory premises until at least 2022 after it was announced that the cinema had over 10,000 customers within a month of opening.

He said that plans are underway to redevelop the former bowling alley to create a further four-cinema auditorium to increase the number of screens from two to six.

Mr Arthur said that he was blown away with the demand that had existed in the county for the cinema and is aiming to offer a greater amount of choice in the future.

He said: “The fact that we have been able to attract 10,000 visitors in the first four weeks has delighted everyone.”

“There has been a general warmth towards the cinema where local people seem to have accepted the idea of the ‘use it or lose it’ mentality.

“This kind of support for a cinema has not existed elsewhere as in bigger towns and cities they might take their cinemas for granted.”
