EMERGENCY services were involved in a dramatic rescue on the first day of 2016 when a porpoise was stranded in the River Wick.
The mammal was spotted near Service Bridge in Wick on Friday afternoon by a passerby who attempted to refloat it, but was unsuccessful.
Police called out Caithness Seal Rescue and Cetacean Response Team (CSRCRT) and British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) to the scene.
With the help of local people the porpoise was transported to Staxigoe Harbour.
Four volunteers carried the porpoise from the vehicle down to Staxigoe Harbour and lowered it into the water.
The mammal successfully found its way out of the harbour and swam out to sea.
