Great deal on rail travel for over-55s.

The train between Wick and Inverness currently takes almost four-and-a-half hours. A link over the Dornoch Firth would cut 45 minutes off that time.A RETURN train ticket to anywhere in Scotland for under £20 sounds like a dream come true for far north day trippers but that’s exactly what ScotRail announced this week.

The Scottish rail service provider is expanding its Club 55 discount this autumn to offer customers 16 extra days of cut-price travel.

It means over-55s will be able to travel anywhere in Scotland for £19 return from September 3 to November 30.

First class return journeys are also available on selected routes for £26.

ScotRail’s commercial director Sean Duffy said Club 55 continues to be the rail firm’s most popular offer, with more than 125,000 journeys made using these tickets last autumn.

“Now we’ve expanded it to allow even more time for customers to make the most of the discount,” he said.

“It’s the perfect excuse to enjoy an autumn break before winter sets in.”

The deal allows return travel up to one month after the outward journey and includes travel to and from Berwick-upon-Tweed or Carlisle.

Holders of senior or dlsabled persons railcards, who are 55 or over, get the additional bonus of a further £2 discount.

Club 55 customers can start their journeys early, provided they do not arrive in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen or Dundee before 9.30am on weekdays. Some evening conditions also apply. Customers can also save up to 70 per cent on a selection of Scotland’s top hotels through the Club 55 partnership with Hotel Connexions.
