ELEVEN public telephone boxes in Caithness are to be taken out of commission in the latest cull overseen by BT in Scotland.

Kiosks at Canisbay, Dunbeath, Freswick, Keiss, Latheron, Latheronwheel, Mey, Reay, Thrumster, Watten and St Magnus Road in Thurso are to be taken out of service following the latest consultation.

In September, BT drew up a provisional hit list of the latest boxes it wanted to be disconnected permanently, including 16 in Caithness.

Those that faced the axe included the box outside Thurso railway station despite a survey showing that it had not been used once in a year up to September 2016.

It is being retained along with four others which were in danger of being removed. They are those at Dunnet, Lyth, Main Street in Lybster, and Harrow Hill in Wick.
